Palm Springs is the epicenter of some of the world’s largest and most esteemed annual Film Festivals, and the Arthur Lyons’ Film Noir Festival is right up there with the best of them. Fans of the genre arrive days in advance, settle into their digs, and then jump right into the many festivities.

Steeped in mystery and suspense, these classics never get old, and it is a cool way to spend your day or evening.

You’re Invited! May 9, Opening Night Cake and Champagne Celebration

This year, the Film Noir Festival celebrates its twentieth year, and everyone is invited on May 9 to join in the opening night celebration. Arrive around 6:30 p.m. for cake and champagne!

Founded in 2000 by Arthur Lyons, the late mystery author and Palm Springs community leader, the popular Film Noir festival includes an eclectic mixture of prestigious and obscure black and white “B” movies from the classic film noir period. The Festival is known for unearthing and screening rare films, restored classics, and for the special appearances of the stars that were in them.

Arthur Lyons’ Film Noir Festival is presented by the Palm Springs Cultural Center, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established to encourage the development of film, fine art, and community festivals. The Palm Springs Cultural Center incubates, produces, and encourages arts and cultural programs in order to leverage the unique power of creativity to open minds, bridge what divides us, and discover what connects us.

• CINCO DE MAYO FIESTA — May 5
  Enjoy Mexican food, margaritas, and appearances by talented local students at Old Town Artisan Studios in La Quinta. Proceeds benefit Tools for Tomorrow, a Palm Desert–based nonprofit that provides free after-school arts programs for kids. www.toolsfortomorrow.org
• ARTHUR LYONS FILM NOIR FESTIVAL — May 9–12, 7:30 p.m.
  Filmmakers of the 1940s and ’50s had a thing for pairing cynical investigators with not-so-virtuous women in crime-focused melodramas. Get your fill as the Palm Springs Cultural Center hosts four days of screenings.
• DESERT’S 1ST ANNUAL LIVEWELL FESTIVAL’S “RUN OF THE DESERT CHARITIES” — May 18, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  At Palm Desert Civic Center Park. The 5K run-walk unites charities across the desert in an event that promises to bring fundraising and awareness for all the charities involved.
